BioVitrum organized and held a school-seminar with international participation "The difficulties and errors in dermatopathology"

24th of June, 2016 BioVitrum organized the school-seminar "The difficulties and errors in dermatopathology" at the St. Petersburg Clinical Research Center specialized types of medical assistance. The event was held under the auspices of the Russian Society of Pathologists. The school-seminar was attended by more than 150 specialists from all over Russia.

The importance of the seminar theme is obvious. Over the past 40 years the number of skin cancer patients has increased by 7 times, the annual increase of the incidence is 5%. According to statistics data of 2011, malignant skin tumors occupy in Russia the first place (14%), ahead of women’s breast cancer and men’s lung cancer. Despite the fact that the skin melanoma is just over 10% of all skin cancers, 80% of deaths are attributable to malignant skin tumors. If earlier the disease was diagnosed in people over 60 years, in recent years, it is exposing young people and even 18-year-olds.

The event program contained more than a hundred diagnostically difficult cases of the skin disease. The participants discussed on practice the clinical cases of dermatopathology, extremely rare pathological processes and cases of non-tumor pathology (tumor-like, infectious and inflammatory diseases). All preparations have been presented by the high-quality digital slides and accompanied by the brief clinical information.

The lecturer of the seminar was Professor, Doctor of Medicine Thomas Mentzel (Germany):

  • Resident of Jena University (Germany), surgical pathology;
  • Associate Professor of Pathology and Professor at the Medical School of the Freiburg University (Germany);
  • Member of the Education Committee of the German division in the International Academy of Pathology.

The school became the opportunity of sharing the enormous experience accumulated by years in the skin cancer diagnosis and treatment. The key objective was to familiarize the participants with the basic approaches to the skin diseases diagnosis, which are based on clinical and morphological comparisons, as well as to present the therapy results.

Within the framework of the program were discussed the following topics:

  • Difficulties of dermatofibromas differential diagnosis (including atypical and malignant analogs). Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma, histiocytosis of Langerhans cells;
  • Difficulties of differential diagnosis adipocytic lesions;
  • Difficulties of differential diagnosis of vascular and pericytial (perivascular) lesions.

Each lecture contained practical analysis of cases.

For participants of the school-seminar was organized the exposition, where were represented products for pathological studies as a part of the BioVitrum product portfolio and companie’s own innovations:

  • Hardware-software complex Histoviewer had a great interest among the audience. Anyone could explore the histological slides with difficult clinical and morphological cases by Histoviewer. Digital high quality materials with the basic clinical information were on the first portal for pathologists in Russia HistoScan.com, which ensured quick and easy access to all materials.

  • Multi-functional laboratory information system LabForce (Med IT Solutions (Russia)), designed to automate the pathology laboratory work. LabForce allows saving and organizing all the necessary information in a single database, as well as providing support for the workers of laboratory processes.

  • Modern equipment and supplies for a wide range of histological and immunohistochemical studies.

The event attracted the specialists from all over Russia. Lively discussion of clinical cases continued even during breaks. Russian specialists consulted with the lecturer (Thomas Mentzel, Germany) on topical issues and difficulties in dermatopathology.
