Digital images replace the microscope - a unique solution for safer and faster diagnosis in Region Skåne

The workflow in the clinical pathology is revolutionized, and the traditional diagnosis in microscope is replaced largely by digital images, which the pathologist examines direct on the computer screen. Increased patient safety and faster response times, with better use of resources in a LEAN influenced workflow is the goal. The efficiency should be done with a newely purchased IT support system from Software Point.

Today in Labmedicin Skåne pathology laboratories in Helsingborg, Kristianstad, Lund and Malmo together annually produces approximately 500,000 slides with prepared test materials. Slides are physically delivered to the pathologists, for examination under a microscope. The pathologist dictates response that is typed in lab data system. Where the slides are and how many slides available at the respective pathology lab is difficult to follow.
With the new technology to scan images of the slides from the four laboratories are transferred to a central bank and then in a continuous flow routed to which audit capability exists. This
avoids bottlenecks and at the same time, both pathologists and other employees at the laboratories follow the sample flow, from the time the sample arrives at the laboratory until the response is sent to the originator.
The image bank is expected to be one of the largest in Northern Europe.
A growing proportion of clinical pathology business is to provide prognostic and predictive treatment basis, thus ensuring a maximum for each patient tailored treatment. This is especially
important in the field of cancer where the enormous biological collection of knowledge during the last 20 years now having an effect in terms of increased survival of many forms of cancers.
Installation of the system from Software Point, part of LabVantage Group, will begin in autumn
and is expected to be fully operational in spring 2012.
"This is fantastic, exciting, and I see it as a great challenge to lead the Clinical Pathology in a
whole new digital world that enables a higher quality and patient safety, with a more efficient
use of the expertise our pathologists possess "says Lena Luts, Chief of Operations
for Clinical Pathology in Skåne.
