BioVitrum participated in a school for young scientists in molecular and cellular biology

The second school for young scientists studying molecular and cellular biology took place on September 3rd through the 5th 2014, at the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk. This school is a part of a broad set of scientific and educational activities (begun in 2010) which feature lectures by leading scientists in molecular and cellular biology, biotechnology, and molecular aspects of basic medicine.

Presentations were given by scientists from the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine and the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The school was attended by more than 120 listeners and presenters from twenty organizations located in Novosibirsk, the Novosibirsk Oblast, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tomsk, Irkutsk, Ulyanovsk and Yekaterinburg and Ufa. Talks were focused on the latest achievements of cytogenetics, genomics, immunogenetics, molecular biology and biochemistry.

BioVitrum presented on multiplex assay technology, which enables the detection of nucleic acids without amplification.

Sergei Tolmachev, a leading specialist on product development at BioVitrum, discussed the nCounter nucleic acid assay system, which can simultaneously process data for 800 genes in a single test tube. More importantly, it provides a method of rapid screening for polygenic disorders such as cancer.

Clinical application of this technology was ranked fourth in the Top 10 Innovations for 2013 by The Scientist

On the final day of the school, participants discussed ongoing problems and achievements of molecular biology.
