BioVitrum Company Takes Part in VI Congress of the Russian Society of Medical Geneticists

14-18 May, 2010, Rostov-on-Don – The Rostov State Medical University received The VI Congress of the Russian Society of Medical Geneticists (RSMG) that is a major event for medical genetics specialists. Leading Russian and foreign medical officers visited the Congress.

Since the last RSMG’ meeting in 2005 there have been several specialized genetics-related conferences and workshops. Though the scope of their activities was not sufficient to discuss a wide range of genetics issues and did not enable participants to exchange views and experience. Over the last 5 years a significant number of scientific discoveries were made and used to develop new detection and treatment methods. Scientists advanced substantially in the investigation of cancer, genome functions, in the development of neonatal screening and perinatal diagnostics methods, in the identification of new genes responsible for genetic variability and cells pathogenesis. The VI Congress turned out to be a kind of a medical genetics forum that joined practitioners and specialists and gave them an opportunity to report on and to discuss various research and practice trends.

The event was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Health Care and Social Development of the Russian Federation, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, RAMS Medical and Biological Sciences Department, RAMS Medical Genetics Research Center, and the Ministry of Health Care of the Rostov Region. High level of the event was supported by the participation of Zhukov V.A., the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Southern Federal District. He pointed at the Congress importance concerning the creation of the unified treatment methods, and paid special attention to the fruitful activity of geneticists in the field of early diagnosis and treatment of hereditary and evoked diseases. As a part of the Congress there was a discussion on both the general matters in the operation of the Medical and Genetics Service of Russia and specialized education and specific issues on cytogenetics, oncogenetics, immunogenetics, stem cells genetics, genotoxicology, and pharmacogenetics with its breakthrough in treatment schemes over the last 5 years. There were a lot of other topics concerning diagnosis, cure and aftercare of various diseases considered at the meeting. Quantitative characters genetics and its new research technologies were observed as well.

The Satellite Symposium included a presentation Lucia Hardware-Software Systems for Cytology and Genetics Laboratories by Razvarina Y.N., the sales manager of BioVitrum Company. The report offered cytogeneticists' work automation opportunities based on the state-of-the-art software by LIM Company. The system features in the possibility to automate or semi-automate geneticist' examination of the cytology sample. At present it takes an operator a considerable amount of time to find an appropriate metaphase plate and karyotype it subsequently. LIM software (SW) aims at individual time and labor saving at this examination stage. One should mention customized LIM SW feature when a procedure can be automated fully or partially depending on the geneticist's requirements. So the SW enables automated search for the metaphase plates and manual karyotyping or, on the contrary, manual chromosome recovery at the automated arrangement, or complete automation of the procedure.
A Czech cytogeneticist Dusan Kadlec was invited to the Congress by BioVitrum Company. Non-official atmosphere of the exhibition allowed BioiVitrum's managers, Dusan Kadlec and Russian specialists to discuss medical genetics topics and to consult on the presented up-to-date technologies, in particular LIM SW that arouse much interest. Special thanks for an interesting conversation shall be expressed to Zolotukhina T.V., a laboratory operator, geneticist of higher category.
In conclusion one should point out the high level of the event and express one’s hope to hold such a forum on an annual basis. Modern society comprehends the genetics importance and recognizes huge contribution of geneticists’ discoveries to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that have long been considered incurable. In acknowledgement of their hard work it is required to provide the research laboratories with appropriate tools to save time taken at the routine procedures.
