BioVitrum and Partners Take Part in Educational Improvement Courses “Modern Methods of Finding Legionella in Objects of Environments and Clinical Materials”

This event was held for experts of one of Russia's main health standards establishments (Rospotrebnadzora), treatment-and-prophylactic organizations, and test laboratory centers. Lectures and practical trainings were given for revealing legionella. There were more than 350 participants and it took place at the Federal Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology (Moscow) under the direction of the laboratories managing bacteriologist Irina Novokshenova.

Tatyana Karpova gave the lecture "Techniques of carrying out laboratory research of environmental objects in order to reveal L. pneumophila." Oxoid (UK) gave lectures about the qualitative revealing of L. which showed the fundamental superiority of Oxoid media over similar products for finding microorganisms. This resulted in recommendations being given about media and supplements.

Among the advantages of using supplements is that the growth supplement LEGIONELLA BCYE GROWTH SUPPLEMENT contains ACES – buffer. ACES - buffer is an almost insoluble substance, therefore during preparation of a supplement from some components there can be difficulties. However with ready supplements there is no necessity to manipulate the рН size to a preset value in vitro which reduces operating time and helps to avoid errors.

Oxoid media – the best for extraction (with selective and growth additive) and control (without additives). For re-culturing, and culture museum maintenance it is possible to use cheaper media.

Also during the presentation Oxoid anaerostat and gas generation packages were shown which can be used for the creation of optimum conditions of Legionella cultivation.

During the practical training there were Oxoid CM0655B demonstration cups with agar for Legionella, cultured by museum cultures and water samples from potential sources of infection have been shown.

Types of cultures were determined by means of the Oxoid DR0800M latex test "Latex agglutination" in order to differentiate the main legionella serogroup.

Great attention during the training was given to screening method of antigene Legionella detection in urine.

Bacteriologists also held 20 parallel testings of Immunochromatography panels of Oxoid R24680 Set XPECT and Binax for detection of Legionella.

According to the bacteriologists participating in the training, Oxoid offered a simpler procedure of carrying out the test, and the visual results (control and test strips) were more accurate.
