VII International Annual Conference Problems of Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer – White Nights of Saint-Petersburg

White Nights is a traditional meeting of leading Russian oncologists. One should also mention increasing interest on the part of foreign specialists to the event. This year' Conference allowed Russian doctors to exchange experience with their French, Czech, Polish, German, English, Italian and other colleagues. The high level of the event was proved both by foreign specialists' participation and by the symposium organized jointly with European School of Oncology (ESO).

The Conference was opened by Prof. Belyayev A.M., director of the Federal State Research Institution of Oncology n.a. Prof. Petrov N.N.; Prof. Manikhas G.M., chief medical officer of Municipal Clinical Oncology Dispensary; and Prof. Semiglazov V.F., RAMS Corresponding Member.

Conference program included lectures and scientific reports on breast cancer morphology, heredity, treatment methods, and screening. Eero Suonio (France) presented his report on the latest topic and considered breast cancer diagnosis in Europe. Russian specialists also paid much attention to the above mentioned problem. It was proved by Prof. V.F. Semiglazov’ s report Technologies of Identification and Accurate Diagnosis of Nonpalpable Breast Cancer, and by Prof. G.A.Frank’s work Breast Cancer Pathomorphology. Diagnosis Methodic, that covered malignant growths’ nature, structure, development, and diagnosis.

The program included reports on the oncology tumors’ early diagnosis and sickness rate. There is a stable annual increase of breast cancer cases.  First of all it is connected with the lack of timely medical inspection and low level of mass media involvement so female population is not aware of prevention techniques and early diagnosis significance. 60% of breast cancer cases in Russia can be revealed at the 1-2 stages. Specialists also point out at the increased number of patients with benign neoplasms. Current situation implies the necessity of standardized medical inspection among females.

It is worthwhile noting that Russian and foreign researcher’s findings were presented at the Conference. Polish doctors in cooperation with Canadian ones were successful in hereditary breast cancer treatment. Specified course of chemotherapy among BRCA1 patients resulted in complete tumor regression in 9 of 10 women.

Oncologists and histologists discussed issues on malignant tumors nature, development and treatment, as well as early breast cancer diagnosis problems. The program included report Contemporary Morphologic Methods of Breast Cancer Diagnosis – Immunohistochemistry and In-Situ Hybridization by the leading IHC specialist of OOO BioVitrum Alexander Gilyarov. Fundamental distinction of IHC from other immunologic diagnosis methods is in structural specificity: it allows identifying both antigen in a sample and its quantity and distribution in a histology specimen. IHC examination provides for better tumor histogenesis and determination of possible metastasis source, for definition of tumor sensitivity to hormone treatment, and for evaluation of cell functionality status. BioVitrum Company is engaged into IHC materials and devices supply, so it offers a complete range of antibodies and hi-tech IHC automation equipment.

Special attention was paid to malignant neoplasms’ cytodetection techniques. They provide for quick and reliable examination results.

The Conference turned out to be the platform for various discussions including such topics as association of tumors with pregnancy, abortion and lactation; treatment methods to prevent metastasis in healthy organs etc.

The Conference Problems of Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer was held simultaneously with the III International Annual Conference Breast Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
The Conference has been visited not only by leading Russian and foreign oncologists but also by plastic surgeons. Nowadays much attention is paid to the psychological rehabilitation of the patients which underwent surgery. Doctors face an important task to eliminate cosmetic defect after operative intervention to perform full treatment. At present it is possible with the help of specified material that does not prevent a prescribed treatment.

Summing up one should emphasize the importance of such events.  VII international annual conference Problems of Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer – White Nights gathered leading oncologists and became an excellent opportunity to present their scientific findings, exchange experience and ideas, discuss new breast cancer diagnosis and treatment methods. Next year we hope to get optimistic data on the timely breast cancer cases diagnosis, to get to know about new findings in the sphere of diagnosis and effective treatment of oncology diseases.
