BioVitrum held a school with the world-famous foreign pathologists as speakers

On October 5-6, a School-Seminar with international participation “Hard cases of differentiated diagnostics in surgical pathology”was held in St. Petersburg. Eminent professors from the United States and the Czech Republic spoke at the event. They shared their own approaches to the cancer diagnostics and gave useful recommendations for Russian colleagues. The seminar was organized by the St. Petersburg Oncology Center and BioVitrum company, with the support of the Russian Society of Pathologists.

The seminar discussed theoretical and practical issues of oncopathology with an emphasis on kidney tumor, urinary bladder and skin as well as various complex diagnostic cases in surgical pathology.

Ksenia Shelekhova, Head of pathoanatomical department of Oncology Center: “Our event was devoted to three main topics. The first is a neoplasm of the urinary system with an emphasis on kidney tumors. Then we studied  in great details annexed skin tumors. The last part was devoted mainly to new nosological forms of the head and neck area. ”

Georgy Avraamovich Frank, chief pathologist at the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation, member of the presidium of the Russian Scientific Society of Pathologists: “This topic is extremely relevant as there are many cancer patients all over the world. Moreover, there are opportunities for early diagnostics and improving treatment outcomes”.

The School lecturers are the world's leading experts in the field of tumor pathology. Among them are Professors Michal Michal, Ondrej Hes and Dmitry Kazakov from the Czech Republic, and Maria Tretyakova from the USA. The emphasis was placed on a lively discussion and interesting practical cases. Lectures were built on the basis of unique medical cases from their own practice.

Professor Ondrej Hes: “Such meetings are useful for both sides. The audience gets an analysis of interesting diagnostic cases. Lecturers get feedback from colleagues and professional discussion”.

Professor Maria Tretyakova: “First of all, for practicing pathologists this format is the most understandable and convenient. It allows them to apply the experience and knowledge they gained here in their practice”.

The experts considered on such important topics as skin appendages tumors, the kidneys tumors  with papillary architectonics and “traps” in surgical pathology. Together with the lecturers, School participants were able to compare the results of PD-L1 testing in urogenital carcinomas. The speakers also talked about important updates in the latest edition of the WHO classification for renal cell carcinoma and provided practical manual for the diagnosis of new nosological forms.

This solution allows taking all the necessary measurements and case descriptions as immediately at the doctor’s workplace and on-line, remotely using computer connected to LIS. The system includes a patented automatic calibration solution that allows precise morphometry, and also has a module for tracking material in histological cassettes. The system gives the possibility of photo, video and audio recording of the work process.  All data, received during the work, are recorded in an electronic patient card.

One more BioVitrum IT solution - the laboratory information system LabForce from the Russian company Med IT-Solutions (part of the BioVitrum group of companies) was presented to guests. It is designed for automation of all stages of work - from the registration of the material to the issuance of the result. The system allows you to create a wide range of analytical reports on the laboratory work.

The pathologists’ attention was attracted by the demonstration of the Histoscan.сom portal capabilities. This is a cloud of digital images of high resolution histological slides,  that can be used in everyday medical practice and in the educational process. With the help of the portal Histoscan.сom, doctors from different regions can hold remote consultations.

IT solutions of BioVitrum are aimed at accelerating the process of diagnosis and improving the quality of treatment.

School participants showed great interest in reagents and consumables of BioVitrum’s own production - Histomix paraffin media and kits of routine and special staining. Specialists of BioVitrum had consulted the doctors and researchers, told about the products features and advantages.

The School guests were also presented the possibilities of Tanartis the metal production, one of the divisions of the company BioVitrum.

The event was attended by over 170 pathologists, oncologists, dermatologists and other specialists. Among them were Russian doctors and their colleagues from Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Moldova.
